Building An Armature And Sculpting A Head In The Round. In the previous lessons, weve talked quite a bit about the skull as an underlying structure that informs the skin on top of it. The entire skeleton works that wayfrom your baby toe to your hip to your forearmyour entire system of bones is a structure that helps to hold and shape your skin. An armature works in the same way. Take your time, dont rush, and if you need to stop you can. Work as long as you feel comfortable, taking appropriate breaks. When you do take an extended break, make sure you move your sculpture to somewhere safe so that it doesnt get knocked over. Since youre using the recommended plastiline clay, theres no need to cover your sculpture or keep it moist like you would with ceramic clay. Be sure to refer to our Nourish Flourish section for tips if you plan to work for several hours at a time. Exercise One Armatures. Exercise 1 consists of first reading the text below about armatures, their use, and how to construct one. Then, you will watch the first 1 2. Kent constructs his armature. Here are images of the bust at the end of exercise two and exercise three What Is An Armature And Why Do I Need One An armature is a rigid framework that provides support and stability to a sculpture. It is mostly used in large sculptures that are made of a soft material like clay to keep it from slumping over if you take out your clay and roll a long log then try to stand it on its end, youll notice how it has a hard time remaining upright. Armatures can be made of a variety of materials, but the most common is a basic metal structure, but wood can also be used. Sometimes an armature is meant to stay inside the sculpture, as is the case with large plaster or concrete sculptures. For this type of sculpture, an armature of chicken wire would be made first, then fabric dipped in plaster is laid over the top to prevent plaster from dropping through the holes in the chicken wire. I found this great Instructables lesson on sculpting a large gecko out of concrete. Games Microsoft-Train Simulator. The artist, Al Shaper, documented the process step by step. Lets take a look at his metal armature This is the basic armature, made out of welded steel bars. You can see on the leg and part of the tail where the artist is beginning to add chicken wire. Here, the armature has more chicken wire over the metal bars. You can see more pictures and the end result of this large gecko here http www. Makng a concrete gecko 7. Other armatures are designed to come out of the sculpture. Some clay sculptures are initially held up with a metal armature and wadded up newspaper, which are then removed before the firing process. Leftover paper pieces will burn out in the kiln, but the metal must be removed to prevent damage to the piece because metal wont burn, it expands when it is heated which is the opposite of clay, which shrinks when heated. The combination of these two things can cause the clay piece to explode in the kiln during the firing process. When you finish your full bust and move on to making a Basic Two Part Silicone Mold, youll make a mold of your finished piece then remove the armature by, well, destroying your original clay piece. But dont worryyoull have a mold of your completed piece that you can keep forever. Heres an example of what an armature for a full figure looks like next to a sculpture on that armature Sculpture House Armature from Dick. Blick. com Sculpture House is a registered trademark. Heidi Maiers armature. Later on in this lesson, youll be sculpting a full head. Now you might think that you dont need an armature for that because the head is round and theres nothing to flop over. Thats sort of rightunless you want to add a neck. The neck is fairly thin compared to the head, and the weight of the clay used to build the head will cause the neck to bend and warp in ways that are more flamingo than human. Its also helpful to create an armature for your headeven if you dont plan on adding a neckbecause it will keep the head off your table and allow you to view it in the round 3. Armature Supplies. Floor flange. Steel pipe. Pipe Fittings. Heres an example of these pieces being used in a sculpture armature from our video on sculpting a bust Remember that this armature will stay in your sculpture as long as you keep it around, so if youre making multiple pieces at once, make sure you have enough armatures to support all of them. Once you make a mold of your sculpture, you can tear it apart and reuse the clay and armature to make another masterpieceIts helpful to have a power drill when youre making armatures. Sure, you can screw the floor flange into your board with a manual screwdriver, but its much easier with a power drill Consider borrowing one or renting it for an hour or two from a local home improvement store. Small power drills like this one can be purchased for around 1. Armatures In Art History. Before you sighgreat, another art history lessonIll be brief about this.
